How we met

Steve and I met through our love of basketball.

Steve - After I returned home from my mission I moved to the LA area. I took classes and studied while I was working as a Computer Tech. I had always wanted to be a firefighter growing up, because I knew their work schedules allowed for a lot of Family time. I took classes and tested with various Fire Departments for over seven years before I got my dream job.

Kim - I had always wanted to be a teacher, and after I finished my degree at BYU I was offered a teaching job in California. I thought it would be fun to teach by the beach for a couple of years so I packed up my car and drove to California. Steve and I went to the same singles church for almost three years before we met each other. It was a very large group of singles.

Steve - I attended singles wards for many years before meeting my wife. One night I noticed her playing basketball at our singles activity. I was impressed by her competitive nature, so I decided to invite her to play with a group of us that played once a week. We started spending more and more time together and I realized I wanted to date her. I decided to ask her out.  Unfortunately she said no.

Kim - I didn't really say no, I just couldn't go that first night he asked. I had enjoyed playing basketball with Steve and was really starting to fall for him. I was really excited when he asked me out, but I already had plans. I quickly tried to find another time that would work.  We ended up making plans for the following Tuesday. We went out to dinner at a Deli near the beach. After dinner we went for a walk along the beach and out onto the pier. While we were walking we talked about many things. One of the things we talked about was the t.v. show 24. We both liked that show and Tuesday was the night it was on. We quickly changed our date and went back to my apartment to watch 24. From that night on we had a standing 24 date night.   That night was the first of many fun dates. We dated for several months and I knew I was falling in love with him.

Steve - My family has gone camping every year at the beach. It is a family tradition that we all look forward to. I thought that it would be a perfect place to propose to Kim.  I had been ring shopping, but I wanted to surprise her.

Kim -  I was very surprised! When we got to the beach Steve wanted to go for a walk on the beach. I didn't want to set up the tent after dark so I insisted we wait until later. So, we went for a walk in the dark I was surprised when he pulled out a flashlight and asked me to marry him.

Steve - So my surprise didn't quite go as I planned, but she said yes and that made my night. We were married several months later in the Los Angeles Temple.

Kim - It is nice that Steve asked me at this beach, because every year we return with our family, and we get to take a walk on the beach and remember that special night.
